Getting accustomed to a new culture, when you go abroad to pursue higher education, can definitely be tough, but it is never impossible. Every country has their own set of traditions and customs, different mannerisms, popular references etc. Acclimatising to the new environment may take some time, and the following tips will make the transition easier. -

Do your Research

Before you travel to another country, the first step you must take is to do some basic research (read articles, watch videos etc.) about their culture. While you must have already done some research about the institution you will be enrolled in, you must also make sure you try to understand some basic customs and traditions followed by the locals. Do not think in terms of stereotypes and assume anything, it is always best to conduct research before arriving

Be open to new experiences

Step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. With a positive attitude, you’re more likely to see the best your new home has to offer.

Learn the Local Language

While English is spoken by people in most countries, it is always better to at least learn the basics of the local language. If you can understand the language, it becomes simpler to navigate any situation you may face and seeking help becomes easier as well. It might also help you in making new acquaintances in your host country. .

Seek support from other international students

Finding other students that are from your own country or from any other country (except the host country) is important when you are studying abroad. They can become your support system and since they can relate with your challenges, they might be able to provide good advice on how to resolve them.

Keep an open mind

If a fellow student or faculty behaves in a different manner, try and understand what you have experienced in your country might not be the same there. Circumstances are different, and you should probably keep an open mind and analyse, the same way you expect others to understand your differences, do the same for them.
